Kayaking is a water activity in which you will glide through water in a low-riding boat with a double-sided paddle. Sitting low with your legs stretched forward, you paddle using blades at both ends, switching sides with each stroke to keep moving in the water. It will become easy once you grasp the technique and coordination of paddling.

You are in untainted water in a small boat, watching how the paddle moves through the water while feeling the gentle waves and the soft breezes. You have silence, tranquility, water, and the sound of the waves.

Havelock Island is where everyone goes for the water sports since it has that cool long coastline, and behind it, there's a thick mangrove forest, so it feels pretty wild and natural. Kayaking in Havelock Island isn’t one of those overrated experiences with loud motors, speed, and thrill.

It’s just you in a long, low boat, sitting almost flat, legs out, paddle in hand. You get moving, not fast, not slow, just steady. Water is calm most of the time. No one’s yelling instructions at you. Just push and switch sides. It takes a minute to get used to, but then it’s easy. Almost too quiet, in a good way.

You’ll go through open water or sometimes through the mangroves; it depends on where the guide takes you. You hear stuff you normally don’t pay attention to. Your partner will either paddle in sync or mess it up, and both are kind of fun. It’s not some massive thrill, but your arms will feel it, and your brain gets a break. You’re in it, not watching it from a boat.

In Havelock Island, you can do kayaking both during the day and at night. We offer two types of packages: one where you can kayak in the open sea under a clear sky, observing the dense mangrove forest during the daytime, and another where you can experience the magical bioluminescent water at night.

Day Kayaking at Havelock Island: Exploring in the Sunlight

Havelock Island has day kayak hire, starting right at the harbour. An instructor will greet you, help you into your kayak, give you a brief (20-minute) instruction, and off you go. You then paddle for about an hour through some spectacular, crystal-clear water through either mangrove creeks or lagoon areas.

This route isn’t about big thrills—it’s peaceful. But you do get that sense of adventure: gliding over underwater roots, seeing fish swim beneath, and hearing birds in the mangroves. It’s easy to pick up and perfect for anyone aged 12 to 50. Your guide stays with you but lets you set the pace. For couples or small groups, it becomes a shared memory of sunlit exploration.

Night Kayaking at Havelock Island: The Bioluminescent Experience

Once the sun sets, the water shows a whole new side. Night kayaking starts near Elephant Beach (you’ll need to get there yourself). After dark, you push your kayak into waters that suddenly light up. Every frame that you paddle causes the bioluminescent waters to swell with light. The sea teems with the soft, glowing, surreal stars beneath the water's surface—little marine illuminances that are together in total symphony with hope and amazement.

The tour lasts about an hour, and a certified guide is there with you the entire time, not hovering, just available if you need something or lose your way. You don’t need to bring any gear. We provide everything at the start: kayak, paddle, life jacket, all set. If anything goes wrong or you’re unsure of what to do, help is right there without making it a big deal.

What stands out most is what happens in the water. Every time you dip the paddle or move forward, there’s this glow beneath the surface. It takes you by surprise at first. It looks unreal, but it’s not. The entire stretch lights up as you continue. It’s quiet, with no background noise, just you watching the water come alive as you move through it. Something about it stays with you.
