  • Ross Island, now known as Netaji Shubash Chandra Bose Dweep, was originally named after Captain Daniel Ross is a tiny island that is located in the south Andaman District, Port Blair. It is just five kilometers from the Water Sports Complex. It is one of the easiest inter-islands to visit during your trip to the Andaman Islands.

When most of the tourist spots in Andaman Islands are popular for beaches, Ross Island is known for its history as well. First occupied in 1782, a sanatorium was built on the island. Britishers used it as an administrative headquarters for a total of 85 years. Various important government offices were made by them on this penal settlement during this time. But after an earthquake in 1941, these were abandoned.

The ruins of the old buildings constructed by Indian prisoners can still be seen in Ross Island. These are textured by thick roots of peepal trees that take all the visitors back to an era that is long gone yet still remembered. The place gives out a unique vibe that cannot be found anywhere else in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. You can witness magnificent man-caves, the old church, and a grim history.

The whole experience gets further memorable with its protected forest that is a sanctuary of diverse birds and animals including peacocks and deer. So you are definitely going to have a good time there if you love walking around and enjoy your time in the lap of nature under the shade of tall tropical trees.

An important thing to know is that the civilian settlements of any kind are prohibited by the administration here. Therefore, there is no place to stay at night here. Everyone must leave the island before dawn.

You can have a glimpse of the remnants of an affluent past on this island. It is an ideal place for strolling amid sylvan surroundings with a diversity of flora and fauna. If you are lucky, then you can spot here deers, peacocks, exotic birds, etc.

Ross Island was the seat of power during the British days. Later, it was developed into a self-equipped township comprising all the facilities required for a civilized colony. The notorious and horrible penal settlement was established with a total of 200 convicts by Dr. Walker.

The natives were persuaded by the British to start living on this island. Andaman House was set up for them in 1863. Later, aborigines had to provide their services to catch the escaping convicts from there.

A museum known as Smritika has been also established on Ross Island by the Indian Navy. It is highly popular among tourists. It is a must-visit among those who are keen on photography. They can get wonderful pictures of old buildings that are nearly collapsed and only their bare skeletal structures are left. The growing sturdy tree roots are holding them together. Such a sight cannot be missed!

It is a long walk to see the whole island and thus, you are advised to carry plenty of drinking water and snacks.

Places to Visit and things to Do in Ross Island

Let us expand your horizons giving you ideas about which places you should visit here and make it a superb excursion.

    Explore the ruins

There is a lot of history associated with Ross Island, and this is the top reason to visit this extraordinary place. The island is home to some of the oldest British and Japanese structures in India showcasing the lavish life of Britishers after the occupied Andaman Islands. The island also served as the residence of the old Chief Commissioner. All operations in the isles, including the construction of Cellular Jail, were overseen from Ross Island.

The ruins include the following along with many others:

    • Church
    • Secretariat
    • Government House
    • Chief Commissioner's residence
    • Long strips of luxury gardens
    • Swimming pool
    • Grand ballrooms
    • Tennis court
    • Water treatment plants
    • Hospital
    • Printing press, etc.

Looking at these remnants of our unforgettable past will take you back to the penal settlement age and remind you of our struggle for freedom.

Attend the Light and Sound Show

This show will take you back to the past by presenting the history of how everything was planned and constructed in the islands. The show majorly showcases the penal settlement period including how Britishers came to the islands, what they focused on constructing, and setting the administration to rule the isles.

The luxurious lifestyle of the Chief Commander and his family is also showcased in the show. It will also explain the difficulties faced by the inmate Indian workers who build the jail, only to be thrown in their cells later on. We recommend attending this show if you want to add a pinch of history to your vacation.

    Visit the Sanctuary

Located in the middle of the island, the sanctuary is home to deer and peacocks, which are protected under the Andaman administration. They live inside a reserved area filled with large tropical trees including coconuts and palms. Also, they can come out of the reserve to play around with visitors. The crucial offices and constructions throughout the island are connected by theses caves that follow several joint paths. In order to ensure safety and swift return and to avoid any complications that may occur, it is highly recommended that you visit there with a guide with you.

The island is the summit of a volcano that rises about 2,250 meters from the seafloor, with 354 meters above the waterline. Rising from depth, it is the emergent summit of a volcano. Is Barren Island Safe?

On January 23, 2017, it was in the news that the volcano has erupted in small episodes of about five to ten minutes. There were clouds of ash, and red lava fountains were ejecting from the crater. The hot lava flowed streaming down its slopes. But there is absolutely nothing to worry about as this is nothing new at all when we talk about Barren Island. It is predicted to erupt at least five times over the next 100 years.

The first record of the volcano’s eruption dates back to 1787. In the year 1991, there was an eruption and the smoke billowed out for about six months. Since then, there have been eruptions every two-three years. It erupted in February 2016 as well.

All these eruptions lie at the lowest level of the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI). On the basis of the quantity of volcanic material spewed and its strength, the index ranks the volcanoes on a scale from 1-8. The last eruption that took place in 2017 was recorded as a 2 on the index which is much in the safe limits.

Things you Should know About Barren Island

A remote island in the Andaman Sea, Barren Island is popularly known for housing the only confirmed active volcano in the area of South Asia. It is situated at a distance of 138 kilometers from Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This volcano forms a part of the chain of volcanoes that is found along the belt of Sumatra till Myanmar. In 1787, the first-ever eruption was recorded here.

Barren Island volcano has been known to erupt ten times since its first eruption. Last time, there was an eruption in 2017. The years 1789, 1795, 1803-1804, and 1852 have recorded eruptions. The eruption that took place in 1991 after nearly 50 years of dormancy became the focus of a lot of scientific researches and discussions. The eruption caused a lot of damage to flora and fauna all around as it continued for a few months.

As evident from the name, Barren Island is a barren or deserted area and is not inhabited by human beings. But the island is home to a small-size goat population along with bats, birds, and rodents that have managed to survive in the extremely tough conditions.

As the island is one of the restricted-entry areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Archipelago, you are required to take special permits for visit from the local authorities. Make sure that you procure the permit if you have decided to visit this island. No night stay is permitted there. You have to plan early morning expeditions to the vicinity of the island in boats, chartered cruises and ships and take a look at the island from a distance.

After obtaining the necessary permits and making the needed arrangements, special game fishing activity, snorkeling or scuba diving expeditions can be conducted under the guidance of expert, licensed and trained professionals. These adventurous activities are extremely engaging and may take six to eight hours of your expedition time. So you need to plan everything in advance. Havelock Island-based scuba divers can be engaged to escort you during a Barren Island water exploration trip.

The island vicinity will leave you awestruck by the diversity of flora and fauna. The excursion to this island is definitely going to be worthwhile when you will witness the interesting rock or basaltic formations, the variegated topography caused by the previous lava flows, and the lively coral gardens.

The volcano island was recently in news for being active, spewing a lot of lava and ash. A team of scientists belonging to the National Institute of Oceanography from Goa visited there. These scientists rested all apprehensions calling the fulmination of the volcano to be benign. The short eruptions lasted from five to ten minutes. Ash clouds were spumed in the daytime while red hot lava fountains were ejected from the crater after sunset. Scientists have recovered black pyroclastic material like coal after sampling the sediments. For ascertaining the ecological impact of volcanic activity, repeated scientific expeditions were planned.

Barren Island is nearly three kilometers wide and has a crater measuring two kilometers having walls surrounding it as high as 250-350 meters high. For the last recorded eruption, the Explosivity Index was two on a scale of 1 to 8, which is rather low. The eruption of 1991 reduced the number of animal and bird species as it was proved catastrophic.

You can view Barren Island through an aerial view by embarking on a Sea Plane from Port Blair. The tickets are quite expensive though. The service of these Barren Island Sorties is available on an on-demand basis. Per sortie can accommodate as many as seven passengers. The 7th-century Chinese Buddhist monk I-ching, the Arab travellers of the 9th century, and Marco Polo (c. 1254–1324) are among those who mentioned the islands. The name Andaman is believed to be derived from the name of the monkey god of Hindu mythology, Hanuman and Nicobar are traced back to the Tamil word Nakkavaram ("land of the naked") by the historians.

Often coined as "A slice of Paradise ”, Andaman Islands is not just another destination BUT is a crosscut to a landscape that is a slice of solitude on Earth. Boasting of some of the most iconic landmarks combined with the poetic panorama of nature with scenic beauty is so eye-captivating that it lures travellers from all around the world. Andaman’s history is as fascinating as its beaches. It is an honour and privilege for us to introduce you to some of the most interesting facts about this island which have been compiled from multiple sources.

    Prehistoric Andaman

Some genetic studies suggest that the Andamanese were isolated from other populations over 30,000 years ago. The earliest archaeological evidence, however, dates back to some 2200 years.

    Indigenous Language

When the Nicobarese people were first discovered by Europeans, they used to speak Moh-Khmer and Shompen languages which were unrelated to Andamanese. Instead, these languages are closer to Austroasiatic languages.

    Island Without A Name

Circa 1440, Italian traveller Niccolo de Conti mentioned the islands and said that the name means ‘Island of Gold’. Could it be, we wonder? History buffs and enthusiasts often wonder if there is a hidden national treasure on the islands? The popular belief remains that the islands got its name from the ancient Indian God, Hanuman (Sanskrit form Andaman).

    Myths and Sagas

In the book titled “Book of Wonders” which was produced in Paris, (France) during the early 15th century, it was depicted that the Andaman Islands were inhabited by wolf-headed people! These false claims can be traced back to the inaccessibility of islands during that time.

    Barter That Changed The Geography

Originally, Andamans was a part of Burma. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru traded this island with the Burmese people in exchange for two districts of Manipur. Now Imagine how different historical facts about Andaman would have turned out to be, had this one incident not happened.

    Wars

As customary to most of the civilizations around the world- early days of Andamans also saw a struggle between ‘outsiders’ and islanders. One of the most famous being the ‘Battle of Aberdeen’ fought between the Andamanese tribe and the British on May 17, 1859. To commemorate the local tribesmen who lost their lives, a memorial has been built at the Andaman Water Sports Complex.

    A Blood Stained History

Andaman and Nicobar Islands were occupied by Japan for three years during World War II. The takeover came as a result of Indian revolutionaries joining hands with the Japanese to create a stronghold against the Britishers. The Japanese landed at South Andaman on March 23, 1942. They soon took over the islands and freed the inmates of the cellular jail who were asked to join the Indian National Army.

    • Most of them joined too.
    • These revolutionaries, headed by Dr Subash Chandra Bose, convinced the Japanese to give the islands back to India.
    • They then hoisted the Indian flag here on December 30, 1943, and named the islands Shared Swaraj. But all did not remain well.
    • The atrocities of the Japanese on the Indians was nothing short of the barbarity that happened during holocaust, but they are not spoken about as much.
    • Over 2000 Indians died during this period before the British recaptured the islands in 1945. Rumour has it that the Japanese made a secret tunnel connecting Ross Island to Port Blair, though it has not been discovered till date.

    World War II:

During World War II, the islands were under Japanese control, only nominally under the authority of the Azad Hind Fauz of Subhash Chandra Bose. He visited the islands during the war and renamed them as "Shaheed-Dweep" (Martyr Island) and "Swaraj-dweep" (Self-rule Island). On February 22, 1944, General Loganathan of the Indian National Army was made the Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. On March 21, 1944, the Headquarters of the Civil Administration was established near the gurdwara at Aberdeen Bazaar.

    On October 2, 1944-

    • Col. Loganathan handed over the charge to Maj.
    • Alvi left Port Blair, never to return.
    • Japanese Vice Admiral Hara Teizo and Major-General Tamenori Sato surrendered the islands on October 7, 1945, in a ceremony performed on the Gymkhana Ground, Port Blair.

    Dark Chapter of Cellular Jail

    cellular jail

Perhaps the most painful historical fact about Andaman is the history behind cellular jail, which was built to keep political prisoners who were India’s freedom fighters. The island was often popularised by the people as ‘Kala Pani’ or black waters. Thousands of prisoners were tortured and killed in jail. The jail today stands as one of the most visited landmarks by the tourists who come to the islands.

    A New Beginning

Andaman eventually became a part of India in 1950, despite the announced intention of the British Government to resettle all native Anglo-Indians and Anglo-Burmese on these islands to form their separate nation. Andaman was declared a Union Territory of the nation in 1956. Since the 1980s, it has also become a hub for Indian defence services to develop various facilities, serving a crucial position in India's strategic role in the Bay of Bengal and the Malacca Strait.

    The Tsunami of 2004

Exuding a natural rustic charm, Kala Pathar Beach lies on a corner in the eastern coast of Havelock Island. Known for its lush green forest cover running parallel to the big beautiful sea, a picturesque solitude, and bright corals heaped along the shoreline makes Kala Pathar Beach an absolute delight to visit.

If you go a little distance away from the beach, beyond the Kala Pathar Village, a beautiful panorama of paddy fields and banana plantations come into view. This landscape paints quite a different picture from the bustling life of tourists in islands, showcasing the quiet life of the islanders. The stretch of the road that leads to the Kala Pathar Beach is undulant. Though the beach tends to get a bit crowded in the tourist season, yet if one walks further to the south they can get to the clutter-free zones that are still and serene without much tourist action taking place.

A forsaken island with a beautiful and alluring ambience is ideal for anyone who just wants to get away from the hum-drum of the world, sit by a tree, and relax on the beach. Best to visit as a stopover attraction, Kala Pathar beach is a place with no one around, most of the time.

The best time to visit the beach is spring to soak in the beautiful stretch of white sand in contrast to the black rocks and perfect sync with the glimmering ocean. Spring is when everything appears greener and better, the perfect season to explore Havelock's crowned jewel, Kala Pathar. The beach is neither too hot nor too cold, the weather is pleasant, and the sea breeze is mild.

    How to Reach

Kala Pathar Beach is roughly 70 kilometres from Port Blair and almost 6.5 kilometres from Havelock Jetty. Located on the eastern coast of the island, the route to Kala Pathar has quite some cheap options to reach here. One can either take long scenic walks, hire a taxi, rent a bike, or drive if you have a car.  There are no bus services on this route, and the drive takes roughly 10 minutes.

    Offers

There are a couple of umbrellas and wooden chairs on the beach. During the peak season, locals often begin selling fresh coconuts and fruit juices. To maintain the cleanliness of the beach, trash bins are also set in the proximity. During a hike to the jungle, a lodging path comes into view where once resided an elephant training camp and now lies an isolated beach.

An ideal site for weary travellers to relax and rejuvenate, the water here is deep enough to swim unaffected by tidal waves. Be wary of corals and rocks before entering the water. As the beach is uncrowded, couples can enjoy a long romantic walk on the beach and families can create some memorable moments together in peace. Since there are no restaurants or shacks near the beach, it is best to carry some snacks and drinking water with you.

Wondering What to do on Kala Pathar Beach?

    1. There is not much to do at Kala Pathar, except cherishing the solace and solitude, whilst taking in the beauty, one view at a time.

Carry a hammock, tie it to a tree, and say cheers to nature while drinking coconut water. Bask in the exquisite aura of the beach, and capture the moment in your memories forever. • Ever since provisions around permit for the Andamans eased in 2018, the travel scene in the island has been in full swing. Veer Savarkar International airport in Port Blair connects Andaman archipelago to all major cities of India. The airport is roughly at a distance of 5 kilometres from the city centre. Far from the mainland yet closer to the capital city, Havelock Island lies roughly 70 kilometres from Port Blair. Although one might discover a different side of Havelock Island in almost every season, to experience Havelock Island at its best, most travellers flock to the island from October to April.

Owing to its geographical position, Havelock Island remains a detached island, meaning that there are no roads that connect it to other islands, making sea route the only viable mode of transport. The sea voyage to the island takes less than 2 hours. As of 2019, SeaPlane does not operate on the island and travellers have the option to choose between government/private ferries. Island transfers are different from land transfers. Rule number one has to be, always book your tickets beforehand to avoid any last-minute shenanigans.

    Government Ferry:

The lifeline of Andaman Islands, Government Ferry is the most pocket-friendly, and the easiest available means how to reach Havelock Island. The trip takes nearly 2.5 hours and works around a fixed schedule. The ferries depart at ?6 A.M (2.5-hour voyage), 11 A.M (4-hour journey via Neil Island) and 2 P.M (2.5-hour voyage). All ferries leave from the Phoenix Bay Jetty in Port Blair, a small, bustling wharf with shallow waters. While availing government ferries, remember to book the tickets as early as possible. The tickets usually sell-out pretty fast as it is commonly used by locals for their inter-island transport and is therefore subject to availability. Once you have boarded the ferry, take a walk outside your cabin and savour the crisp blow of air and cerulean waters around you.

    Private Cruise/Ferries:

Another way to go about the journey from Port Blair to Havelock Island is via private ferries. Ideal for travellers, these ferries offer luxury travel at a standard price and assures a comfortable experience. A tad expensive than the government-operated ferries, cruises travel faster and take relatively less time. The most reliable operators for cruise boats are Makruzz and Green Ocean and deliver a premium in-cabin experience. While Makruzz takes 90 minutes to reach Havelock Island, Green Ocean takes 120 minutes to make the journey. They run on time, are tidy, well organized, and have staff on board to assist you in case of emergency. The availability depends upon the season you're visiting in, i.e. low in peak seasons and high availability during the off-season. Either you can book tickets via the ground offices of the respective operators, or online through their portal. We would still recommend booking well in advance to ensure a hassle-free experience.

    Air:

Helicopters are undeniably an extravagant, yet another means to travel from the capital city to Havelock island. Initially commenced by Jal Hans, the first flight of the 10-seater helicopter was from Port Blair to Havelock. The panoramic aerial view of the islands is enthralling, and the journey in itself is exhilarating. The services though open for both tourists and Islanders, are quite hard to avail. Owing to the set priority list, tourists often find themselves at the bottom of the waiting list.

There are certain things to keep in mind -
    1. Avoid travelling in turbulent weather. Due to bad weather conditions, ferry often gets cancelled by the authorities.
    2. Remember to carry valid ID proof. While checking-into the ferry, an ID card is a must.
    3. Ferry timings often change owing to the weather, so it is advisable to keep an eye on the chart.
    4. Book well in advance. Availability is dynamic, and tickets often sell out.

    Getting Around:

Getting around on an island is different from traversing a city. The local transport in Havelock Island is relatively simple and easy to use. The villages have their own beaches, those beaches have numbers assigned to their names, and the roads are set straight without any traffic. There is hardly any scope to lose your directions, but when it does happen, locals are happy to help.

Taxis - Tourists can rent taxis from Havelock jetty for interisland travel. These tend to work best for travellers who travel in a schedule and are up for saving time more than money. However, be wary of the drivers that are bound to overcharge you, where you might have to bargain your way out. If you book a package for Andaman excursion, taxis will be taken care of along with the rest of the transport.

Bike rentals - Renting a bike on an island and riding into the sunset is what travel goals exude. An easy and cost-effective local means of transport in Havelock Island is by renting a motorcycle, scooter or a bicycle. Travellers usually hire them on an everyday basis for a minimal amount and set off to explore the island on their own. Monsoon seasons are risky, and we would not recommend renting a bike then, as the roads become slippery, which can prove dangerous.

Auto rickshaws - Tuk-tuks or auto rickshaws are probably India's favourite mode of local transport. They are cost-effective and readily available. You can hail them during the day on one of the main roads or at the marketplace. A short trip might cost you around INR 50 to 200, and a long ride, say Radhanagar Beach might cost you around INR 700 to 1000. The prices are standardized, though that does not stop travellers from bargaining.

Public Transport - Backpackers or budget travellers can also opt for shared jeeps and government buses to commute within the island.

Walking, however, remains one of the most common means of transport. It is the best way to explore a destination, and there is no denying that. If your energy and time permits you, we suggest you tie your shoelaces and go for a long walk to the beach.

  • Sea walking is the most exclusive and unique water activity as in India, it can only be done in the Andaman Islands. The best thing about it is that it can be done by people of all age groups and with anyone- family, partner, or alone. While doing it, you can explore the magical marine life as you go down and walk on the seabed of a serene beach of the island. You can walk past the exotic aqua life and the breathtaking coral reefs with the help of a visor and a special helmet. You will be taught the basics and sign language before diving in. This will help you in communicating under the water. While exploring the jewels of the ocean, you can treasure these miraculous moments even more by getting clicked by a professional photographer. Underwater sea walking is the most magnanimous experience to have in the Andaman Islands. This water sport combines the very best of the scuba diving experience without having to swim constantly.

A superb fun adventure sport, absolutely no experience is required to do underwater sea walking. There is not any complicated equipment to handle. Just wear the helmet and walk on the smooth and clean sand of the seafloor. You will get a close-up view of the underwater world without any hassle. The instructors are there by your side at all times, thus it is perfectly safe to do. Neither your contact lenses/glasses nor your fancy hairdo will get messed up under the water. No wonder it is one of the most preferred water sports in the Andamans. Just walk on the ocean bottom like you walk on the land, but without putting efforts to balance or swim. Enjoy a smooth walk on the sea bottom surrounded by colorful life corals.
