A unique confluence of black boulders against white silky sandy shores, Kala Pathar Beach probably derives its name from its appearance, or the local village, or the adjoining Black Road. Exuding a natural rustic charm, Kala Pathar Beach lies on a corner in the eastern coast of Havelock Island. Known for its lush green forest cover running parallel to the big beautiful sea, a picturesque solitude, and bright corals heaped along the shoreline make Kala Pathar Beach an absolute delight to visit.
If you go a little distance away from the beach, beyond the Kala Pathar Village, a beautiful panorama of paddy fields and banana plantations come into view. This landscape paints quite a different picture from the bustling life of tourists in islands, showcasing the quiet life of the islanders. The stretch of the road that leads to Kala Pathar Beach is undulant. Though the beach tends to get a bit crowded in the tourist season, yet if one walks further to the south they can get to the clutter-free zones that are still and serene without much tourist action taking place.
A forsaken island with a beautiful and alluring ambience is ideal for anyone who just wants to get away from the hum-drum of the world, sit by a tree, and relax on the beach. Best to visit as a stopover attraction, Kala Pathar beach is a place with no one around, most of the time.
The best time to visit the beach is spring to soak in the beautiful stretch of white sand in contrast to the black rocks and perfect sync with the glimmering ocean. Spring is when everything appears greener and better, the perfect season to explore Havelock's crowned jewel, Kala Pathar. The beach is neither too hot nor too cold, the weather is pleasant, and the sea breeze is mild.
Kala Pathar Beach is roughly 70 kilometres from Port Blair and almost 6.5 kilometres from Havelock Jetty. Located on the eastern coast of the island, the route to Kala Pathar has quite some cheap options to reach here. One can either take long scenic walks, hire a taxi, rent a bike, or drive if you have a car. There are no bus services on this route, and the drive takes roughly 10 minutes.
There are a couple of umbrellas and wooden chairs on the beach. During the peak season, locals often begin selling fresh coconuts and fruit juices. To maintain the cleanliness of the beach, trash bins are also set in the proximity. During a hike to the jungle, a lodging path comes into view where once resided an elephant training camp and now lies an isolated beach.
An ideal site for weary travellers to relax and rejuvenate, the water here is deep enough to swim unaffected by tidal waves. Be wary of corals and rocks before entering the water. As the beach is uncrowded, couples can enjoy a long romantic walk on the beach and families can create some memorable moments together in peace. Since there are no restaurants or shacks near the beach, it is best to carry some snacks and drinking water with you.
1. There is not much to do at Kala Pathar, except cherishing the solace and solitude, whilst taking in the beauty, one view at a time.
2. The ideal way to spend a day on the beach is to put up a hammock nearby, grab a book and a drink to complement the ambience, and watch the clouds sway along with the waves.
3. The tranquil environs make for the perfect sunbathing shenanigans.
4. Bring your camera along to capture the big black boulders against the backdrop of a big blue ocean. Palm-fringed shorelines, clear skies, and the sun shining through the trees, Kala Pathar Beach is a photographer's all-time favourite.
Stroll at the beach, and feel the gentle breeze swaying your hair. Walk on the silky sand, and witness the changing hues of the sky. Carry a hammock, tie it to a tree, and say cheers to nature while drinking coconut water. Bask in the exquisite aura of the beach, and capture the moment in your memories forever. Timings - Radhanagar Beach can be visited anytime between Sunrise to sunset.
Mobile Connectivity - The internet and mobile network are grim in Havelock Islands, including Radhanagar beach.
Ever since provisions around permit for the Andamans eased in 2018, the travel scene in the island has been in full swing. Veer Savarkar International airport in Port Blair connects Andaman archipelago to all major cities of India. The airport is roughly at a distance of 5 kilometres from the city centre. Far from the mainland yet closer to the capital city, Havelock Island lies roughly 70 kilometres from Port Blair. Although one might discover a different side of Havelock Island in almost every season, to experience Havelock Island at its best, most travellers flock to the island from October to April.
Owing to its geographical position, Havelock Island remains a detached island, meaning that there are no roads that connect it to other islands, making sea route the only viable mode of transport. The sea voyage to the island takes less than 2 hours. As of 2019, SeaPlane does not operate on the island and travellers have the option to choose between government/private ferries. Island transfers are different from land transfers. Rule number one has to be, always book your tickets beforehand to avoid any last-minute shenanigans.
{show_package package-id="50,14,16,30" title="Our Package"}
Government Ferry:
The lifeline of Andaman Islands, Government Ferry is the most pocket-friendly, and the easiest available means how to reach Havelock Island. The trip takes nearly 2.5 hours and works around a fixed schedule. The ferries depart at ?6 A.M (2.5-hour voyage), 11 A.M (4-hour journey via Neil Island) and 2 P.M (2.5-hour voyage). All ferries leave from the Phoenix Bay Jetty in Port Blair, a small, bustling wharf with shallow waters. While availing government ferries, remember to book the tickets as early as possible. The tickets usually sell-out pretty fast as it is commonly used by locals for their inter-island transport and is therefore subject to availability. Once you have boarded the ferry, take a walk outside your cabin and savour the crisp blow of air and cerulean waters around you.
Private Cruise/Ferries:
Another way to go about the journey from Port Blair to Havelock Island is via private ferries. Ideal for travellers, these ferries offer luxury travel at a standard price and assures a comfortable experience. A tad expensive than the government-operated ferries, cruises travel faster and take relatively less time. The most reliable operators for cruise boats are Makruzz and Green Ocean and deliver a premium in-cabin experience. While Makruzz takes 90 minutes to reach Havelock Island, Green Ocean takes 120 minutes to make the journey. They run on time, are tidy, well organized, and have staff on board to assist you in case of emergency. The availability depends upon the season you're visiting in, i.e. low in peak seasons and high availability during the off-season. Either you can book tickets via the ground offices of the respective operators, or online through their portal. We would still recommend booking well in advance to ensure a hassle-free experience.
Air:
Helicopters are undeniably an extravagant, yet another means to travel from the capital city to Havelock island. Initially commenced by Jal Hans, the first flight of the 10-seater helicopter was from Port Blair to Havelock. The panoramic aerial view of the islands is enthralling, and the journey in itself is exhilarating. The services though open for both tourists and Islanders, are quite hard to avail. Owing to the set priority list, tourists often find themselves at the bottom of the waiting list.
There are certain things to keep in mind -
1. Avoid travelling in turbulent weather. Due to bad weather conditions, ferry often gets cancelled by the authorities.
2. Remember to carry valid ID proof. While checking-into the ferry, an ID card is a must.
3. Ferry timings often change owing to the weather, so it is advisable to keep an eye on the chart.
4. Book well in advance. Availability is dynamic, and tickets often sell out.
Getting Around:
Getting around on an island is different from traversing a city. The local transport in Havelock Island is relatively simple and easy to use. The villages have their own beaches, those beaches have numbers assigned to their names, and the roads are set straight without any traffic. There is hardly any scope to lose your directions, but when it does happen, locals are happy to help.
Taxis - Tourists can rent taxis from Havelock jetty for interisland travel. These tend to work best for travellers who travel in a schedule and are up for saving time more than money. However, be wary of the drivers that are bound to overcharge you, where you might have to bargain your way out. If you book a package for Andaman excursion, taxis will be taken care of along with the rest of the transport.
Bike rentals - Renting a bike on an island and riding into the sunset is what travel goals exude. An easy and cost-effective local means of transport in Havelock Island is by renting a motorcycle, scooter or a bicycle. Travellers usually hire them on an everyday basis for a minimal amount and set off to explore the island on their own. Monsoon seasons are risky, and we would not recommend renting a bike then, as the roads become slippery, which can prove dangerous.
Auto rickshaws - Tuk-tuks or auto rickshaws are probably India's favourite mode of local transport. They are cost-effective and readily available. You can hail them during the day on one of the main roads or at the marketplace. A short trip might cost you around INR 50 to 200, and a long ride, say Radhanagar Beach might cost you around INR 700 to 1000. The prices are standardized, though that does not stop travellers from bargaining.
Public Transport - Backpackers or budget travellers can also opt for shared jeeps and government buses to commute within the island.
Walking, however, remains one of the most common means of transport. It is the best way to explore a destination, and there is no denying that. If your energy and time permits you, we suggest you tie your shoelaces and go for a long walk to the beach.
Sea walking is the most exclusive and unique water activity as in India, it can only be done in the Andaman Islands. The best thing about it is that it can be done by people of all age groups and with anyone- family, partner, or alone. While doing it, you can explore the magical marine life as you go down and walk on the seabed of a serene beach of the island. You can walk past the exotic aqua life and the breathtaking coral reefs with the help of a visor and a special helmet. You will be taught the basics and sign language before diving in. This will help you in communicating under the water. While exploring the jewels of the ocean, you can treasure these miraculous moments even more by getting clicked by a professional photographer. Underwater sea walking is the most magnanimous experience to have in the Andaman Islands. This water sport combines the very best of the scuba diving experience without having to swim constantly.
A superb fun adventure sport, absolutely no experience is required to do underwater sea walking. There is not any complicated equipment to handle. Just wear the helmet and walk on the smooth and clean sand of the seafloor. You will get a close-up view of the underwater world without any hassle. The instructors are there by your side at all times, thus it is perfectly safe to do. Neither your contact lenses/glasses nor your fancy hairdo will get messed up under the water. No wonder it is one of the most preferred water sports in the Andamans. Just walk on the ocean bottom like you walk on the land, but without putting efforts to balance or swim. Enjoy a smooth walk on the sea bottom surrounded by colorful life corals.

Crucial things to keep in Mind While Visiting the Andaman Islands
Reaching the Andaman and Nicobar Islands
There are no direct flights to the Andaman Islands from everywhere. For instance, if you are flying from Delhi or Mumbai, then you will have a layover in Hyderabad or somewhere else. From there, you will be flying to Port Blair, the capital of the island. Its airport is Vir Savarkar Airport. However, there are direct flights also from a few cities such as Chennai, Bangalore, and Kolkata.
To reach any major island from Port Blair, you will be required to take a government ferry or a faster private catamaran. However, the timetables are not predictable, and services are slow. Sometimes, it can take up to three to four hours to reach Havelock Island or Neil Island.
One of the most famous and well-maintained museums of Andaman, the Anthropological Museum sheds light on the profound and informative portrait of the island's area people of tribes. These tribes are considered together of the oldest in the world.
The museum displays various articles like handicrafts, tools, arts and crafts, implements, photographs, and clothing dating back to the era of the prominence of these native tribes. It also showcases models of clay and hay to inform of the houses, utensils, ornaments, and equipment used by these tribes. The museum works towards the aim of preserving the heritage and tribal culture of the islands.
The Anthropological Museum resides at a distance of around 7.3 kilometres from Port Blair which will ideally consume 13 to 15 minutes. The most convenient mode to reach the Anthropological Museum is to travel via MG road. The museum remains open between 09:00 AM to 01.00 PM and 01.30 PM to 04.30 PM. Make sure you plan your visit following the timings of the museum.
{show_package package-id="50,14,16,30" title="Our Package"}
The museum throws light on the four Negrito Tribes of the Andaman, Jarawas, Sentinelese, Great Andamanese, and therefore the Onges and two Mongoloid Tribes of the Nicobar viz. the Nicobarese and the Shompens.
The collection of the museum includes portraits, models, and photographs of tribal communities in Andaman Islands. Since these tribes maintain little or no contact with the surface world, the museum may be an excellent opportunity to know their culture and lifestyle. The significant exhibits one can find are shamanic sculptures and the Jarawa chest guard.
The Anthropological Museum gives insights about the life of the tribe that once called this island their home. Andamans houses six native tribes that are isolated from the rest of the world. The museum further enables you to gain insights into the tribal life of these people. What this museum lacks in design, it makes up for in enthusiasm. Not the exact state-of-the-art kind of gallery compiles the information beautifully, so full marks for that. If you are a history buff, make sure to include this landmark in your itinerary.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, formerly known as Ross Island, used to be the residential headquarters for the British administration in the Andaman Islands. The British brought with them all modern amenities and endowed the island with beautiful buildings and government institutions, giving it the nickname of ‘Paris of the East’.
The island clad with coconut and palm trees all across the island resides in the Archipelago of Andaman. However, it is now mostly deserted with some parts of the island retaining the colonial architecture. Incidentally, it was also the capital of the Archipelago for close to a century, between 1858 to 1941. The island has been named after ‘Sir Daniel Ross,’ a marine surveyor and has attracted a vast number of visitors from across the globe.
Ross Island is 3 km away from Port Blair.

Tourists can also explore the historical ruins that are on the island – Troop Barracks, Chief Commissioner’s House, etc. The island is closed to tourists at night. For wildlife enthusiasts, the island has a variety of endangered species of birds and deers and hence makes for an exceptional sight itself. Cellular Jail is a national memorial of great historical significance for India and touts to be the most prominent tourist spot in Andamans. Built by the Britishers during their colonial rule in India, especially to exile political prisoners, the Cellular jail was where the inmates were subject to punishments and atrocities at the hands of the British soldiers.
The construction of the present structure of the cellular jail went on from 1896 to 1906. Nevertheless, the British officers had been using the prison as an exile for prisoners since the late 1950s. Once known as Kala Pani, the jail was used by the British for deporting political prisoners from India.
The cellular jail lies within the town of Port Blair, located at a famous landmark known as Atlanta Point that lies about 7.8 km from the centre of Port Blair via RGT Road. An ideal way to reach the jail complex is by hiring a private cab or an auto-rickshaw for your convenience. Tourists can also hire Two-wheelers and cycles from multiple rental shops in port Blair.
{show_package package-id="50,14,16,30" title="Our Package"}
The architectural style of this jail is cellular. Upon visiting, you will notice that the stories and struggles of the freedom and political fighters of our country displayed proudly on the walls of the prison. You will chance upon a gallery dedicated to the memorabilia of the movement of the freedom fighters, and the anecdotes of the adversities faced by the brave soldiers who were unfortunate enough to bear the torment of the Britishers.
Each parapet of the seven-winged structure stands a proud witness proclaiming the glory of the illustrious dissidents such as Yogendra Shukla, Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and many others. From the corners of the brick structure, one can also view the legendary Ross Island lying just across in front, and the North Bay Island towards the left.
The jail offers a reckoning insight into the horrible past of India. The state of the country under colonialism and the unwavering love of the freedom fighters for their nation. The prison is a standing testimony to what our heroes had to go through to achieve the freedom that we have today. With its historical value and architectural prowess, the Kalapani or Andaman Cellular Jail remains a remarkable place for the tourists who visit Andaman Island from all over the world.
