  • Positioned between 6° and 14° North Latitude and 92° and 94° East Longitude, lie the zenith of an engulfed mountain sierras, and the glorious Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Forming a nearly 800-kilometre arc between Myanmar and Indonesia, the Islands have the Andaman Sea to their east and the Bay of Bengal to their west. Far closer to foreign lands than to the Indian mainland, the islands have been home to indigenous communities who ardently dodged communication with outsiders until the late 20th century.

The Andaman Islands consist of more than 300 islands, while 19 islands make up the Nicobars. North, Middle and South Andaman Islands are cumulatively called Great Andaman Islands, and Havelock Island blissfully lies in the southern province. One of the largest Islands of the archipelago, Havelock Island spreads across a vast area of 92.2 square kilometres. Roughly lying at a distance of 70-kilometre north-east of the capital city Port Blair, the only way to reach the island is via sea route. There are five villages on the island, namely Govinda Nagar, Radha Nagar, Bejoy Nagar, Shyam Nagar and Krishna Nagar.

The limestone, sandstone and rocks formed during the past 65 million years, contribute to the rough terrain of Andaman Islands, owing to the scarcity of perennial rivers and flatland. At the elevation of 1,197 feet, Mount Harriet is the highest point in South Andaman Islands. Havelock Island has a relatively low population density, which thus enables tourism to flourish. Indigenous tribes inhabit remote islands and are mostly off-limits to tourists. The island experiences tropical weather with sea breezes regularly moderating the climate. The average temperature ranges from 23 °C to about 30 °C. The territory welcomes southwest monsoon which usually brings 120 inches of annual rain and whirls from May through September.

Reputed for their palm-lined white-sandy beaches, plush mangroves and tropical rainforests, Andaman Islands has a diverse and vibrant marine life. Definitely, the most popular of the Andaman Islands archipelago, Havelock island, being one of the best sites for scuba diving, is an all-embracing gateway to see life underwater. With miles of astounding coastline, transcendent beaches and surreal nature, the terrain in Havelock Island also provides plenty of trekking opportunities. A walking expedition is the most rewarding way to explore the island, owing to its size and geographical location.

Endowed with a bounty of beaches, spectacular coral reefs, and rich forest cover, Havelock is also an eco-tourism hub. There are seven beaches identified in Havelock which are referred to by their number rather than their names. While Beach number 1 is adjacent to the jetty, Beach number 7, i.e. Radhanagar Beach is the most popular beach of the lot. Andaman Islands receives nearly 200,000 visitors each year, and the numbers keep growing with time. Being part of the most popular tourist trail, i.e. Port Blair-Havelock Island-Neil Island triangle, Havelock is totally worth it. We welcome you to discover Havelock Island, one of the beautiful gems floating in the Indian waters, unique for its mosaic vistas, vivid colours, mahua trees, vast coasts and tropical climate.

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands, considered a union territory in India, consists of two groups of islands. The islands located north of 10° north latitude are known as Andaman Islands while the islands located south of 10° north latitude are called Nicobar. These islands were formed by the above-sea extensions of submarine crests of mountains. The Andaman–Nicobar Islands archipelago is the emergent part of a long ridge which extends from the Arakan–Yoma ranges of western Myanmar (Burma) in the north to Sumatra in the south.

The archipelago adjoins the Andaman Islands Sea to the east, and the west by the Bay of Bengal. A 160 km wide submarine channel running parallel to the 10° N latitude between Car Nicobar and Little Andaman Islands, known as Ten Degree Channel, is a major physiographic discontinuity that separates the Andaman Islands Group to the north from the Nicobar Group to the south. The Andaman Islands Group, located c. 1200 km south-east of the mainland in the Bay of Bengal, is sometimes also referred to as the Bay Islands.

The Nicobars consists of 19 islands, and more than 300 islands make up the Andaman Islands. Collectively known as Great Andaman Islands, North, Middle, and South Andaman Islands are the main islands of this region, Other names include Landfall Island, Interview Island, the Sentinel Islands, Ritchie’s Archipelago, and Rutland Island. The highest peak, known as “Saddle Peak'' stands at 2,418 feet on North Andaman Islands, followed by Mount Thullier at 2,106 feet on Great Nicobar and Mount Harriet at 1,197 feet on South Andaman Islands.

A barren island, the only known active Volcano in south Asia lies in the Andaman Islands sea. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, there were volcanic eruptions on Barren Island. At least 11 mud volcanoes are known to be present on the islands. In 2004 the islands drew global attention when they were severely damaged by a giant tsunami that had been triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean near Indonesia.

The terrain of Andaman Islands is rough, with hills enclosing narrow longitudinal valleys, owing to its formation by sandstone, limestone, and rocks of Cenozoic age (i.e., formed during the past 65 million years). Flatland is confined to a few valleys, such as the Betapur on Middle Andaman Islands and Diglipur on North Andaman Islands. Most of the islands in Andaman Islands exhibit dense forest cover, trees that are more than 30m tall, rainforests, owing to the tropical climate contributing to the lush vegetation.

Large river bodies are scarce in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and while Nicobar is blessed with various perennial streams, Andaman Islands has one river, Kalpong. Originating from Saddle Peak, the river traverses in the northward direction for a distance of roughly 35 kilometres before it joins the Aerial Bay Creek on the east coast. The climate of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is tropical, always warm, but with sea-breezes, with temperatures typically ranging from 23 °C to 30°C. Rainfall is irregular, with islands receiving 120 inches of precipitation annually, brought by the southwest monsoon and the tropical cyclones that follow in October and November.

Along with that, there are very limited accommodation facilities available on Long Island. This place had decent popularity among foreign nationals until 2019. The majority of the Indian travellers don’t include this island in their itinerary as a trip to this point of attraction requires a total of ten or more days’ stay in the Andaman Islands.

Hence, giving it a structure similar to a guitar.

During this time, the weather is extremely pleasant there thus making it the best time to enjoy water sports at the beaches. The sky is clear and the temperature is pleasing.

    How to reach Long Island?

Over 80 kilometers from Port Blair and 35 kilometers north of Havelock Island, Long Island is connected by ferry from Port Blair, Neil Island and Havelock Island. It is connected by road from Diglipur and Port Blair.

How to reach Long Island from Rangat?

By bus- The most affordable option to reach Long Island from Port Blair is to first reach Rangat and from there, you can take a government ferry to Long Island. From the capital city, you can reach Rangat via a government-operated bus 4:30 AM. It will take nearly eight hours to reach there. The bus will pass through Andaman Grand Trunk Road to reach Yeratta Jetty in Rangat. You will have to board a government-operated boat to Long Island from the jetty. It normally takes one hour from Rangat to Reach Long Island in a boat. You should note that the ferry doesn’t sail on a daily basis from Rangat to Long Island. It operates on alternative days, usually Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday at 9 AM and at 4 PM. It is subject to weather conditions as well. However, this schedule can change anytime without any prior notice. Also, you cannot book the tickets in advance.

By private cab- You can also reach Rangat in a personal vehicle from Port Blair. Based upon the availability, the driver may help you in getting the tickets for the government ferry. As an alternative to the government ferry that goes from Rangat to Long Island, there is also a chartered speed boat service to move from Rangat to Long Island. As Long Island is still not completely wireless, the online suggestions or bookings don’t work at all for it. Thus, you need to contact a local person for making the arrangements to visit there.

How to Reach Long Island from Port Blair?

You can reach Long Island from the capital city by hiring a private chartered boat. This will be exciting along with a bit expensive. If you are a group of around eight to ten people, then the tour will be fun and the cost will get divided as well. This option can be considered and you can sail through the archipelago of the islands before reaching Long Island. Fishing enthusiasts can consider game fishing during the journey. In case you are interested in game fishing, then you should inform your vendor in advance so that they get the boat equipped with fishing gear. This way, your journey will be more adventurous.

Another way is to take a government ferry to move directly from Port Blair to Long Island. However, this voyage would be an entire day-long journey. The ferry will follow this route- Port Blair - Neil Island - Havelock Island - Rangat - Long Island. You should know in advance that the sailing is not scheduled daily and the ticket opens only on the day of departure. Thus, if you are in the Andaman Islands for a longer time, then you can consider this potion. But if you have planned a vacation for nearly a week, then visiting Long Island could be difficult for you as there is a lot to do there and you will not be having enough time. However, if you are a repeated visitor to the Andaman Islands and have seen everything else, then you can consider this option.

How to reach Long Island from Havelock Islands and Neil Island?

You will be required to take a government ferry from Havelock Island to Long Island. The ferry is operational on alternate days. This is the same ferry that sails from Port Blair to Long Island. It takes a pit stop in Neil Island, Havelock Island, and Rangat Islands before moving to Long Island. The same applies to visit Long Island from Neil Island. The government ferry also takes a pit stop in Neil Island. Therefore, from Neil Island also, you need to take the same boat to Long Island.

Where to stay in Long Island?

There is a government accommodation known as Surmai Resort and a private property named Blue Planet in Long Island. You can stay at any one of these properties. Surmai Resort has more facilities and is recommended for Indian travellers visiting this island or for any traveler who has planned this trip as a family holiday. On the other hand, Blue Planet is more of an eco hut of thatched roofing and walls. It has only low lying mattresses and mosquito nets as their major amenities. Thus, backpackers can consider this option.

As online things won’t work properly for Long Island, you will be requiring assistance for local companies to get your accommodation booked. When in Long Island, do not expect any luxurious or modern accommodation. The facilities are very basic and kind of eco-stays.

  • The largest town in the North Andaman Islands, Diglipur Island is a fascinating town. Since it is distant from popular tourist attractions like Port Blair and Havelock Island, it often goes unnoticed. However, its remoteness is what makes it an exclusive and enthralling destination. There is a lot to explore in this town, for instance, rich flora and fauna, natural parks, and lively marine life. Diglipur Island is the one-stop destination for nature lovers as well as adrenaline junkies. Here, you can climb the highest peak in the Gulf of Bengal, explore a network of underground caves, observe an active mud volcano, and witness turtle nesting and hatching embraced by crystal clear azure waters.

You will be rewarded with mind-blowing natural attractions if you make your long journey far north in the Andaman Islands. If you are an adventure lover, then you should visit Diglipur Island with snorkeling gear, trekking shoes, and enough time in your hands.

By the looks of it, however, you may find it a tiny dusty town. The infrastructure is still not developed completely keeping in mind the tourists. That is why, it is a bit tricky place to stay in if you are one of those tourists who prefer luxury vacations. Autos and taxis are pricey and buses have fixed timings. Scooters are also not available easily and tough to get hold of. Therefore, Diglipur Island is definitely not a basic tourist destination but if you are daring enough to reach here, then be ready for an adventure of a lifetime that cannot be experienced anywhere else!

What to expect while visiting Diglipur Island?

The best time to visit Diglipur Island is from October to March. The temperature is comparatively cool during this time.

If you are a true nature lover and want the much-needed ‘me-time’ surrounded by nature out there, then there is a long list of things that you can do and see. Trust us, the list is more than just lazing around in the beaches, soaking in their natural beauty and appreciate the greenery. You can spend your day sunbathing, swimming, watching the superabundant mangroves and most importantly, see the diverse species of turtles nesting in its beach.

    Places to see in Diglipur

A quirky little town, Diglipur Island is situated on the northernmost tip of the island chain. It is off the tourist trail probably because of its remoteness from the rest of the Andaman Islands. You can reach this place via road (Andaman Trunk Road) or by a ten-hour voyage through ships. If you want to witness the ingenious version of the Andaman Islands which is a serene parallel world mostly unnoticed, then you have to visit Diglipur to fulfill your travel dream. It is a small town with lodges, vegetable and fish market, temple, bakeries, and a water stream swarmed with hyacinth. Travellers are an unusual sight here, which is a good thing if you don’t like crowds.

Andaman Island is so much more than only sea and sand. If you want to witness impressive natural attractions, then you should spend time in Diglipur. The surrounding sights are amazingly beautiful as well. Have a look at what you can explore in and around Diglipur.

Diglipur Island offers the most romantic experience to the couples. The beaches are popular for the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises in Andaman Islands. Imagine strolling on the beach with your partner amidst a glorious pink and red sunset in the background! Such a fantastic marvel of nature can be witnessed at its secluded beaches. The evenings offer the best natural views. You can catch the most beautiful sunrise of your life here with the sky painted in various lovely hues.

    Ram Nagar Beach

This beach is a long stretch of palm trees fringed by mangrove forests on both sides. The bay doesn’t have the typical light blue turquoise colors because the grayish volcanic sand makes the sea look darker. The place is not good for snorkeling owing to the murky waters but is a perfect spot for swimming. It is considered to be the best around the town.

The beach is a nesting ground for Olive Ridley turtles. Therefore, the beach closes at 5 pm and no one is allowed to walk on the sand afterward. You can also see an artificial hatchery set up there. The turtle nesting season is between December and March, and you can see eggs being laid by sea turtles and released into the water. The beach is being developed into an eco-friendly picnic place for visitors by the forest department.

    Alfred Caves

Diglipur Island is home to more than 41 unexplored caves. Alfred Caves were one of them, named after the scientist who discovered them. These are limestone caves and are completely secluded due to the dense jungle. These are unique and thus, difficult to reach. A trek to these caves is not meant for someone who is faint-hearted as one has to do strenuous trekking for about an hour through narrow jungle trails. October to April is the best time to visit the caves. Avoid the rainy season completely as the paths are slippery and extremely unsafe.

    Lamiya Bay Beach

The gorgeous Lamiya Bay Beach is at the foothills of the highest peak in the Island- Saddle Peak. The beauty of the dazzling beach is further accentuated by the polished pebbles that are laid down on the shoreline. The beach is visited mostly by either honeymooners or nature lovers as it is a highly photographic beach with shrubs and trees displaying contrast. To savor the beauty of sun, sand and shade on a sunny and bright day, there are beautiful eco-friendly huts and watchtowers on the shoreline for the tourists.

    Ross & Smith Islands

The majestic twin islands of Ross and Smith are the most stunning attraction in North Island. The islands are connected by a thin fifty-meter long sand bar. During high tide, this white silky sandy bar descends inside the sea, whereas it surfaces up again during low tide. On the one side, you can go swimming and on the other side, you can enjoy snorkeling. The warm water is crystal clear that offers good visibility. These untamed virgin beaches are the most picture-perfect ones in Andaman Island.

    Jal Tikry

Shyamnagar village in Diglipur Island beholds something very rare. Trekking through its dense forests will make you witness a unique scientific phenomenon called the mud volcanoes, which are locally known as Jal Tikry. These are active for years and some of them have been dormant for quite some time. Considered as one of the rarest occurrences across the whole world, you should include this place in your travel bucket list for sure.

If you have got more time in hand, then you can also explore Kalipur Beach and Saddle Peak National Park. Both of them are perfect for nature lovers. The time spent here will surely leave you with such sweet memories to cherish for the rest of your life.

Enjoying a vacation in Diglipur Island requires early planning as it has limited availability for everything. This is not the place where anything can be arranged in a single click. So, if you want to have your beach holiday at this majestic place with breathtaking beauty, then start deciding on things from now. The peak seasons are extremely busy here and availability becomes a major concern. Thus, associate yourself with a reliable tour operator who would make arrangements for everything including stays, ferry transfers, water activities, and a lot more.

    Reaching Diglipur Island

Diglipur Island is located far up in the North Andaman Island, and is nearly 290 kilometers by road and 180 kilometers by sea from the capital city, Port Blair. You can choose to reach there by road, sea or air.

    1. By air- The fastest and the most exciting option for travel, helicopters are definitely the best choice. During the journey, you can have a look at the breathtaking aerial views of the emerald islands. This is totally worth the extra cost! But since the seats are limited that get full often, you should book at least one day in advance. You can check about the timings and fare at A&N Tourism Information Centre. There is also a baggage limitation.

    2. By sea- This is the most common travel option. Direct ships are available three-four times every week from Phoenix Bay to Aerial Bay. From here, it is nearly nine kilometers to Diglipur Island and nine kilometers to Kalipur in the opposite direction. The complete journey tales nearly a total of ten hours and maybe longer sometimes but more comfortable overnight sails are also available. You can book your tickets at Phoenix Bay office or at the administration block by ‘the Dolphin roundabout’ in Diglipur Island.

    3. By road- Crossing three creeks on the way and the Jarawa tribe area, you can travel up north also by Andaman Trunk Road. However, the journey is quite tiring as it can take up to twelve long hours. There are various early morning buses plying daily from Port Blair to Diglipur Island. You need to buy tickets at least one day prior to the journey date. You can also choose to commute via private AC buses that offer more comfort but are pricier.

Places to stay in Diglipur Island

There are four-five guesthouses in Diglipur Island nearby the main market and stadium. They have all the basic necessities only. Thus, you should not expect luxurious amenities here. If you are looking for high-end resorts, then you can stay in Kalipur, which is twenty kilometers away from Diglipur Island. Cheap bamboo huts are also offered by them. The properties get crowded during peak season. So you should make sure to get your stay pre-booked from a local tour operator.
